You caught my heart
Bewildered, wondering why you held it now.
I could only bow my head from your inquisition,
Couldn't speak the thousand fragments
Fighting to be "the reason".
I raised my eyes enough to see
You, fearful of spreading the poison
Of feelings unrequited.
I smiled, immunized by the knowledge
That even if nothing was given in return,
The receiver was deserving
And the giver had no choice.
You keep it on you, now,
My heart safe in your honesty,
It's not a velvet-lined box
But better bruised than beaten.
